ഒരു ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ജന്തുശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായിരുന്നു ജോൺ എഡ്‌വേഡ് ഗ്രേ (John Edward Gray), FRS (12 ഫെബ്രുവരി 1800 – 7 മാർച്ച് 1875). ജോർജ് റോബർട്ട് ഗ്രേയുടെ മുതിർന്ന സഹോദരനും സസ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ സാമുവൽ ഫ്രെഡറിക് ഗ്രേയുടെ (1766–1828) പുത്രനുമായിരുന്നു ജോൺ.

1840 മുതൽ 1874 -ൽ പ്രകൃതിചരിത്രവിഭാഗം വേറെയാക്കി പ്രകൃതിചരിത്രമ്യൂസിയമാക്കുന്നതുവരെ ഇദ്ദേഹം ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് മ്യൂസിയത്തിലെ ജന്തുശാസ്ത്രവിഭഗം സൂക്ഷിപ്പുകാരനായിരുന്നു. മ്യൂസിയത്തിലെ ശേഖരത്തെപ്പറ്റി അദ്ദേഹം നിരവധി കാറ്റലോഗുകൾ പുറത്തിറക്കി. അതിൽ മൃഗങ്ങളുടെ ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളെപ്പറ്റിയും പുതിയ സ്പീഷിസുകളെപ്പറ്റിയും ആഴത്തിലുള്ള വിവരങ്ങൾ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളിച്ചിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം ജന്തുശാസ്ത്രവിവരങ്ങൾ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്ത് അതിനെ ലോകത്തെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ജന്തുശാസ്ത്രശേഖരമാക്കി മാറ്റി.

ജീവശാസ്ത്രചരിത്രത്തിൽത്തന്നെ നാമകരണവിഭാഗത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ സംഭാവനനൽകിയ ആൾക്കാരിലൊരാളാണ് ഗ്രേ. അദ്ദേഹം വിവരിച്ച 300 -ലേറെ സ്പീഷിസ് ഉരഗങ്ങളെക്കാൾ എണ്ണങ്ങളെ വിവരിച്ചവരിൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് മ്യൂസിയത്തിൽത്തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിൻഗാമികളായി വന്ന ബോളിഞ്ചറും ഗുന്തറും അമേരിക്കക്കാരനായ ജീവശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞൻ എഡ്‌വേഡ് ഡി കോപ്പും മാത്രമേയുള്ളൂ.[1]
