പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഒരു ഇന്ത്യൻ സാമൂഹിക പരിഷ്കർത്താവായിരുന്നു ഗോപാൽ ഹരി ദേശ്മുഖ് (1823 ഫെബ്രുവരി 18– 9 ഒക്ടോബർ 1892). എഴുത്തുകാരൻ, ചിന്തകൻ, പത്രപ്രവർത്തകൻ എന്നിങ്ങനെ പ്രസിദ്ധനായ അദ്ദേഹം അനാചാരങ്ങൾക്കെതിരെ ശക്തമായി പ്രതികരിച്ചുവന്നു. മഹാരാഷ്ട്രയിലെ സാമൂഹിക പരിഷ്കരണ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു നെടുംതൂൺ ആയിരുന്നു ഗോപാൽ ഹരി ദേശ്മുഖ്[2].
ജീവിതരേഖ[തിരുത്തുക]
1823-ൽ ഒരു ചിത്പവൻ ബ്രാഹ്മണ കുടുംബത്തിലാണ് ഗോപാൽ ഹരി ദേശ്മുഖ് ജനിച്ചത്. യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ സിധായെ കുടുംബമായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും നികുതിശേഖരണത്തിന്റെ ചുമതലയുണ്ടായിരുന്നതിനാൽ ദേശ്മുഖ് എന്ന പേരിൽ കുടുംബം അറിയപ്പെട്ടു തുടങ്ങി[3]. കൊങ്കണിൽ നിന്ന് വന്ന ഈ കുടുംബം പൂനെയിൽ താമസമാക്കുകയായിരുന്നു[4].
പൂനെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് മീഡിയം സ്കൂളിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രാഥമിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം പൂർത്തിയാക്കി[5].
ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സർക്കാറിന് കീഴിൽ വിവർത്തകനായി ഉദ്യോഗമാരംഭിച്ച ഗോപാൽ ഹരി, 1867-ൽ അഹമ്മദാബാദിലെ ഒരു ന്യായാധിപനായി ചുമതലയേറ്റു. രത്ലാം സ്റ്റേറ്റിന്റെ ദിവാനായി മാറിയ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സർക്കാർ 'ജസ്റ്റിസ് ഓഫ് പീസ്', 'റാവുബഹാദൂർ' എന്നീ ബഹുമതികളാൽ ആദരിച്ചിരുന്നു[6].

The ' Deshmukh's ' were 'Chittapavan' Brahmins, originally residents of Konkan, known by the surname " Sidhaye ', but Vishwanathpant, father of the great-grand-father of Gopalrao who had the 'Deshmukhi' of twelve villages, earned the name 'Deshmukh', and thereafter, all his descendants began to be known as 'Deshmukh' instead of 'Sidhaye'.
