കൊമ്പൻ‌കുയിലിന്റെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലെ പേര് Jacobin Cuckoo, Pied Cuckoo, Pied Crested Cuckoo എന്നൊക്കെയാണ്. ശാസ്ത്രീയനാമം Clamator jacobinus എന്നാണ്.

ആഫ്രിക്കയിലും ഏഷ്യയിലും കാണപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയിൽ ഭാഗ്ഗികമായി ദേശാടനപക്ഷിയാണ്.

ഇടത്തരം വലിപ്പമുള്ള കറുപ്പും വെളുപ്പുമുള്ള കുയിലാണ്. ചിറകിലുള്ള വെളുത്ത അടയാളം പറക്കുമ്പോൾ പോലും ഇവയെ തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ സഹായിക്കും.

ഇന്ത്യയിൽ കാണുന്ന ഉപ വിഭാഗമായ serratus വടക്കെ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ വേനൽക്കാലത്ത് ദേശാടനെത്തി മുട്ടയിടുന്നവയാണ്.
