ഇന്ത്യൻ സൈനിക ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥയും രോഗപ്രതിരോധശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞയുമായിരുന്നു കമല ബാലകൃഷ്ണൻ (ജനുവരി 16,1930-ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 7,2018). ഇന്ത്യൻ സായുധ സേനയിൽ ലെഫ്റ്റനന്റ് കേണൽ, അമേരിക്കൻ സൊസൈറ്റി ഓഫ് ഹിസ്റ്റോകോംപാറ്റിബിളിറ്റി ആൻഡ് ഇമ്മ്യൂണോജെനെറ്റിക്സ് (ആഷി) പ്രസിഡന്റ്, ഒഹായോയിലെ സിൻസിനാറ്റിയിലെ പോൾ ഹോക്സ്വർത്ത് ബ്ലഡ് സെന്ററിലെ ട്രാൻസ്പ്ലാന്റേഷൻ ഇമ്മ്യൂണോളജി ഡിവിഷൻ ഡയറക്ടർ എന്നീ നിലകളിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ആദ്യകാല ജീവിതം
[തിരുത്തുക]1930 ലാണ് കമല ജനിച്ചത്. വെല്ലൂരിലെ ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ നിന്ന് ബിരുദം നേടിയ കമല പൂനെ ആംഡ് ഫോഴ്സസ് മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ ക്ലിനിക്കൽ പാത്തോളജി ഡിപ്ലോമ പൂർത്തിയാക്കി. 1967 ലും 1968 ലും ബർമിംഗ്ഹാം സർവകലാശാലയിൽ രോഗപ്രതിരോധശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ കൂടുതൽ പഠനം നടത്തി.[1]
കരിയർ
[തിരുത്തുക]ഇന്ത്യൻ സായുധ സേനയിലെ ലെഫ്റ്റനന്റ് കേണലും സീനിയർ മെഡിക്കൽ ഓഫീസറുമായിരുന്നു കമല.[2] അവർ ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഹിസ്റ്റോകോംപാറ്റിബിളിറ്റി ലബോറട്ടറി ന്യൂഡൽഹിയിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. 1971ൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ കൌൺസിൽ ഓഫ് മെഡിക്കൽ റിസർച്ചിൽ നിന്ന് ശകുന്തളാ ദേവി അമീർ ചന്ദ് അവാർഡും 1973ൽ കേണൽ അമീർ ചന്ദ് പുരസ്കാരവും കമലക്ക് ലഭിച്ചു.[3] 1980 കളിൽ, ബാംഗ്ലൂർ മെഡിക്കൽ സർവീസസ് ട്രസ്റ്റിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനത്തെ കമല പിന്തുണച്ചു. ഇവിടെ ലബോറട്ടറി സജ്ജീകരിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചും ബ്ലഡ് ബാങ്കുകൾക്കുള്ള പേഴ്സണൽ പരിശീലനത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും ഫലപ്രദമായ ഇടപെടൽ നടത്തി.
1996 മുതൽ 1997 വരെ അമേരിക്കയിൽ അമേരിക്കൻ സൊസൈറ്റി ഓഫ് ഹിസ്റ്റോകോംപാറ്റിബിളിറ്റി ആൻഡ് ഇമ്മ്യൂണോജെനെറ്റിക്സിന്റെ പ്രസിഡന്റായിരുന്നു കമല.[4] 1981 മുതൽ 2001 വരെ ഒഹായോയിലെ സിൻസിനാറ്റിയിലെ പോൾ ഹോക്സ്വർത്ത് ബ്ലഡ് സെന്ററിലെ ട്രാൻസ്പ്ലാന്റേഷൻ ഇമ്മ്യൂണോളജി ഡിവിഷന്റെ ഡയറക്ടറായിരുന്നു അവർ.[5] സിൻസിനാറ്റി സർവകലാശാല ട്രാൻസ്ഫ്യൂഷൻ മെഡിസിൻ പ്രൊഫസറായിരുന്ന അവർ ദി ന്യൂ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ട് ജേണൽ ഓഫ് മെഡിസിൻ, ല്യൂപ്പസ്, നെഫ്രോൺ, ട്രാൻസ്ഫൂഷൻ, ഇമ്മ്യൂണോളജിക്കൽ ഇൻവെസ്റ്റിഗേഷൻസ്, ജേണൽ ഓഫ സർജിക്കൽ റിസർച്ച്, ഹ്യൂമൻ ഇമ്മ്യൂണോളജി എന്നിവയുൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള അക്കാദമിക് ജേണലുകളിലെ ഗവേഷണ ലേഖനങ്ങളിൽ സംഭാവന നൽകി.[3][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] ട്രാൻസ്ഫ്യൂഷൻ ഇമ്മ്യൂണോളജി ആൻഡ് മെഡിസിൻ (1995) എന്ന പാഠപുസ്തകത്തിനും അവർ സംഭാവന നൽകി.[13]
വ്യക്തിജീവിതം
[തിരുത്തുക]ഒരു സഹ സൈനിക ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായ വാതാരണ്യൻ ബാലകൃഷ്ണനെയാണ് കമല വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചത്. ഈ ദമ്പതികൾക്ക് രണ്ട് ആൺമക്കളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. 2018 ൽ ടെക്സസിലെ ഹ്യൂസ്റ്റണിലെ ഒരു ആശുപത്രിയിൽ വച്ച് കമല മരിച്ചു.[14] സിൻസിനാറ്റിയിലെ ഹെൻറി ആർ. വിങ്ക്ലർ സെന്റർ ഫോർ ഹിസ്റ്ററി ഓഫ് ഹെൽത്ത് പ്രൊഫഷൻസിലെ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഓഫ് സിൻസിനാറ്റി മെഡിക്കൽ സ്കൂൾ/യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഹോസ്പിറ്റൽ പബ്ലിക് റിലേഷൻസ് ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫിക് ശേഖരത്തിൽ കമലയുടെ ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫുകൾ ഉണ്ട്.[15]
