ഡെയിം അൻറോണിയോ സൂസൻ ഡഫി DBE (മുമ്പ്, ഡാബ്ബിൾ; ജനനം: 24 ആഗസ്റ്റ് 1936), പൊതുവേ എ.എസ്. ബ്യാറ്റ് (/ˈbaɪ.ət/ BY-ət)[1] എന്ന പേരിലറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് നോവലിസ്റ്റും കവയിത്രിയും ഒരു ബക്കർ പുരസ്കാര ജേതാവുമാണ്. 2008 ൽ “The Times” വർത്തമാനപ്പത്രം 1945 മുതലുള്ള 50 പ്രശസ്ത എഴുത്തുകാരിലൊരാളായി അവരുടെ പട്ടികയിലുൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു.[2]

അൻറോണിയ സൂസൻ ഡ്രാബ്ബിൾ എന്ന പേരിൽ, ജോൺ ഡ്രാബ്ബിളിൻറെയും കാതലീൻ ബ്ലോറിൻറെയും മൂത്ത മകളായി ഷെഫീൽഡിൽ ജനിച്ചു.[3] അവരുടെ സഹോദരിമാരിലൊരാൾ നോവലിസ്റ്റായ മാർഗരറ്റ് ഡ്രാബ്ബിളും മറ്റൊരാൾ ചിത്രകലാ ചരിത്രകാരിയായ ഹെലൻ ലാങ്ടനുമാണ്. സഹോദനർ റിച്ചാർഡ് ഡ്രാബ്ബിൾ ഒരു അഭിഭാഷകനാണ്.[4] രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധകാലത്ത് ഷെഫീൽഡിലെ ബോംബിംഗിൻറെ ഫലമായി അവരുടെ കുടുംബം യോർക്കിലേയക്കു മാറിത്താമസിച്ചു. മാതാവിൻറെ കർക്കശ സ്വഭാവംകാരണമായി ഒരു അസന്തുഷ്ടമായി ചെറുപ്പകാലമായിരുന്നു അവർക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. രണ്ട് യോർക്കിലെ സ്വതന്ത്ര ബോർഡിങ് സ്കൂളുകളായ ഷെഫീൽ‌ഡ് ഹൈസ്കൂൾ, ക്വാക്കർ മൌണ്ട് സ്കൂൾ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലായിരുന്നു വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം. അവർ ബോർഡിങ് സ്കൂൾ ജീവിതം ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നില്ല. കൂടുതൽ സമയവും തനിച്ചിരിക്കാൻ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിനാൽ സുഹൃത്തുക്കൾ വിരളമായിരുന്നു. കേംബ്രിഡ്ജിലെ ന്യൂൺഹാം കോളജ്, യു.എസിലെ ബ്രൈൻ മാവ്‍ർ കോളജ്, ഒക്സ്ഫോർഡിലെ സോമെർവില്ലെ കോളജ് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ ഉപരിപഠനം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു. 1959 ൽ ഇയാൻ ചാൾസ് റെയ്നർ ബ്യാറ്റിനെ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചു. അവർക്ക് ഒരു മകനും മകളുമാണുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. മകനു 11 വയസുള്ളപ്പോൾ ഒരു കാർ അപകടത്തിൽ മരണമടഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. 1969 ൽ ഈ വിവാഹബന്ധം ഒഴിയുകയും പീറ്റർ ജോൺ ഡഫി എന്നയാളെ വിവാഹം കഴിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. വിവാഹത്തിൽ രണ്ടു പെൺകുട്ടികൾകൂടിയുണ്ട്. ബ്യാറ്റിൻറെ സഹോദരി മാർഗരറ്റ് ഡ്രാബ്ബിളുമായുള്ള ബന്ധത്തിൽ അസ്വാരസ്യങ്ങൾ ഉടലെടുത്തിരുന്നു. രണ്ടുപേരുടെയും രചനകളിൽ ആത്മകഥാപരമായ ഘടകങ്ങളുടെ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യമുള്ളതാണ് ഈ അസ്വാരസ്യങ്ങളുടെ പ്രധാനകാരണം. അവർ തമ്മിൽ അടുത്ത ബന്ധത്തിലുമല്ല, രണ്ടുപേരും അന്യോന്യം സാഹിത്യകൃതികൾ വായിക്കാറുമില്ല.
ബ്യാറ്റിൻറെ ആദ്യനോവൽ, കർക്കശക്കാരനായി പിതാവിന്റെ തണലിൽ വളരുന്ന ഒരു പെൺകുട്ടിയുടെ കഥയായ “The Shadow of the Sun”, 1964 ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. അവരുടെ 1967ലെ നോവൽ “The Game” രണ്ടു സഹോദരിമാർ തമ്മിലുള്ള മത്സരത്തിൻറെ കഥയാണ്. “The Virgin in the Garden” (1978), “Still Life” (1985), “Babel Tower” (1996), “A Whistling Woman” (2002), “Still Life winning” എന്നിവയാണ് മറ്റു പ്രധാന പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ.
