കേരളത്തിൽനിന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തിയ ഒരു ഭൂഗർഭ വരാൽ മത്സ്യയിനമാണ് എനിഗ്മചന്ന മഹാബലി (ശാസ്ത്രീയനാമം: Aenigmachanna mahabali). നാഷണൽ ബ്യൂറോ ഓഫ് ഫിഷ് ജനറ്റിക്സ് റിസോഴസസ് (എൻ.ബി.എഫ്.ജി.ആർ.) കൊച്ചി കേന്ദ്രത്തിലെ ഗവേഷകരാണ് ഈ ഇനത്തെ കണ്ടെത്തിയത്.[1][2] ശുദ്ധജലത്തിൽ മാത്രമാണ് ഇവ വസിക്കുന്നത്.[3]
ചുവന്നനിറത്തിൽ നീളമുള്ള ശരീരത്തോടുകൂടിയ ചെറിയ തരം മത്സ്യമാണ് ഇവ. ഏകദേശം 13 സെന്റീമീറ്റർ ആണ് ഇവയുടെ നീളം. തിരുവല്ല സ്വദേശി അരുൺ വിശ്വനാഥിന്റെ വീട്ടിലെ കിണറ്റിൽനിന്നാണ് ഇതിനെ ലഭിച്ചത്.[4] ഭൂഗർഭ വരാൽ ഇനത്തിൽ ലോകത്ത് ഇതുവരെ കണ്ടെത്തിയ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഇനം മത്സ്യമാണിതെന്നു ഗവേഷകർ പറയുന്നു.[5] ഭൂമിക്കടിയിൽ താമസമാക്കിയതിനാലാണ് മഹാബലി എന്ന പേരു ചേർത്ത് ‘എനിഗ്മചന്ന മഹാബലി’ എന്നു പേരു നൽകിയത്.
