ഹ്യൂമൻ ഇമ്മ്യൂണോ ഡെഫിഷ്യൻസി വൈറസിന്റെ ചികിത്സയ്ക്കുള്ള തടസ്സങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണ് അതിന്റെ ഉയർന്ന ജനിതക വ്യതിയാനം.[1] എച്ച്ഐവി രണ്ട് പ്രധാന തരങ്ങളായി തിരിക്കാം, എച്ച്ഐവി തരം 1 (എച്ച്ഐവി -1), എച്ച്ഐവി തരം 2 (എച്ച്ഐവി -2). എച്ച്ഐവി -1 പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ആഫ്രിക്കയിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ചിമ്പാൻസികളിലും ഗോറില്ലകളിലും കണ്ടുവരുന്ന വൈറസുകളുമായി അടുത്ത ബന്ധം പുലർത്തുന്നു. എച്ച്ഐവി -2 വൈറസുകൾ വംശനാശഭീഷണി നേരിടുന്ന പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ പ്രൈമേറ്റ് സൂട്ടി മംഗാബേയിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന വൈറസുകളുമായി സാമ്യം കാണിക്കുന്നു.[2]
