ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ തകർച്ച എന്നത് പ്രകൃതിയായുള്ള ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥ അതിൽ വസിക്കുന്ന സ്പീഷീസുകളെ സംരക്ഷിക്കാൻ കഴിയാത്ത വിധം ഊഷരമായിപ്പോകുന്ന പ്രക്രിയയാണ്. [1] ഈ പ്രക്രിയയിൽ മുൻപ് ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരുന്ന ജീവജാലങ്ങൾ പലായനം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുകയോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ നശിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇത് ജൈവവൈവിധ്യം കുറയ്ക്കുന്നു. വ്യാവസായിക ഉൽപ്പാദനത്തിനു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പ്രകൃതി വിഭവങ്ങൾ വിളയിക്കാനും നഗരവൽക്കരണത്തിനും വേണ്ടിയുള്ള മനുഷ്യന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ തകർച്ചയ്ക്കയ്ക്ക് കാരണങ്ങളാണ്. കൃഷിയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടി ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥകളെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്നത് ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ ഒരു പ്രധാന കാരണമാണ്. ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ തകർച്ചയ്ക്ക് കാരണമാകുന്ന പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട കാരണങ്ങളിൽ ഖനനം, മരം വെട്ടൽ, മൽസ്യബന്ധനം, നഗരമേഖലയുടെ വ്യാപനം എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. ലോകവ്യാപകമായി സ്പീഷീസുകളുടെ വംശനാശത്തിനു കാരണമാകുന്ന പ്രഥമമായ കാരണമായി ഇപ്പോൾ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയുടെ തകർച്ചയെ കണക്കാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
