സുമേറിയൻ രാജവംശത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിൽ നിലവിലിരുന്ന അളവെടുപ്പ് രീതികളിൽ നിന്നാണ് പുരാതന മെസൊപ്പൊട്ടേമിയൻ അളവുകളുടെ ആവിർഭാവം.അക്കാഡിയൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലെ സാർഗൺ ചക്രവർത്തി ഒരു പൊതു മാനദണ്ഡം ഏർപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത് വരെ ഓരോ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും വ്യത്യസ്തങ്ങളായ അളവെടുപ്പ് രീതികളും മാർഗ്ഗങ്ങളും നിലനിന്നിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് വന്ന നരം-സിൻ ചക്രവർത്തി ഈ പൊതുമാനദണ്ഡങ്ങളെ മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തിവന്നു[1], പക്ഷേ അക്കാഡിയൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ പതനത്തോടെ അത് പ്രവർത്തനരഹിതമായി. മൂന്നാം ഊർ ഭരണകാലത്ത് ഇതേ മാനദണ്ഡങ്ങൾ ചെറിയ പരിഷ്കരണങ്ങളോടെ പുനരുജ്ജീവിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ബാബിലോണിയ, അസീറിയ, പേർഷ്യ തുടങ്ങിയ സുമേറിയൻ നാഗരികതയുടെ പിന്മുറക്കാർ ഇവ പിന്തുടർന്നുവന്നു[2]. അക്കാലത്തെ വാസ്തുവിദ്യ, കെട്ടിട ഘടന എന്നിവയൊക്കെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി പഴയ സുമേറിയൻ-അക്കാഡിയൻ മാനകവ്യവസ്ഥ പുനസൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.
