തെക്കെ അമേരിക്കയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നതും വംശനാശം സംഭവിച്ചതുമായ ഒരു ജീവിയാണ് അന്റാർട്ടിക്കൻ ചെന്നായ അഥവാ വാറ. 1689 ൽ റിച്ചാർഡ് സിംപ്സർ എന്നയാളാണ് വാറയെ ആദ്യമായി ശാസ്ത്രലോകത്തിന് പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്.
ചരിത്രം
[തിരുത്തുക]1690-ൽ ക്യാപ്റ്റൻ ജോൺ സ്ട്രോങ്ങ് എന്നയാളാണ് ഇതിനെ ആദ്യമായി കണ്ടത്.[3] ക്യാപ്റ്റൻ സ്ട്രോങ് ഒരു മൃഗത്തെ തന്റെ കപ്പലിൽ കയറ്റിയെങ്കിലും യൂറോപ്പിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്രയ്ക്കിടെ കപ്പലിലെ പീരങ്കി വെടിയൊച്ച ഭയന്ന് കപ്പലിന് പുറത്തേയ്ക്ക് ചാടി.[4][5]
