അഗ്നോട്ടോളജി
സാംസ്കാരിക പ്രേരിതമായി ചെലുത്തപ്പെട്ട, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് അപൂർണ്ണമോ തെറ്റിധാരണാജനകമോ ആയ ശാസ്ത്രീയ വിവരങ്ങൾ പ്രസിദ്ധീകർക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ രൂപീകൃതമായ, അറിവില്ലായ്മ, സംശയം എന്നിവയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനമാണ് അഗ്നോട്ടോളജി അഥവാ അഗ്നാട്ടോളജി. ഈ പദം രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയത് 1995ൽ സ്റ്റാൻഫോർഡ് സർവ്വകലാശാല പ്രഫസറായിരുന്ന റോബർട്ട് എൻ. പ്രോക്ടറും[1] ഭാഷാശാസ്ത്രകാരനായ ഇയാൻ ബോളും കൂടിയായിരുന്നു.[2][3][4] നിയോക്ലാസിക്കൽ ഗ്രീക്ക് പദമായ ἄγνωσις, agnōsis, "അറിയാത്തത്" (cf. Attic Greek ἄγνωτος "അജ്ഞാതം"[5]), -λογία, -logia[6] എന്നീ പദങ്ങളിൽനിന്നാണ് അഗ്നോട്ടോളജി എന്ന പദം രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. പുകയില വ്യവസായ കമ്പനികൾ തങ്ങളുടെ പരസ്യങ്ങളിൽ പുകയില ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ ശരിക്കും ക്യാൻസർ ഒക്കെ വരുമോ, ഇതിനുമ്മാത്രം ദൂഷ്യവശങ്ങളൊക്കെ ഉണ്ടോ എന്ന തരത്തിൽ സംശയം ജനിപ്പിക്കുന്ന തരത്തിലുള്ള പരസ്യങ്ങൾ ഇതിന് ഒരു ഉദാഹരണമായി ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.[6][7] പൊതുവേ, ഒരു വിഷയങ്ങത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള വർദ്ധിച്ച അറിവ് വായനക്കാരെ കൂടുതൽ അവ്യക്തരായി ശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സ്ഥിതിവിശേഷത്തെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് ഈ പഠനം ശ്രദ്ധ ചെലുത്തുന്നത്.

Proctor uses the term "agnotology" – a word coined from agnosis, meaning "not knowing" – to describe a new approach to looking at knowledge through the study of ignorance.
