ഗയസ് ജൂലിയസ് സീസർ ഒക്റ്റാവിയാനസ് എന്ന അഗസ്റ്റസ് റോമൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ ചക്രവർത്തിയായിരുന്നു. ക്രിസ്തുവിനു മുൻപ് 27-ആമാണ്ടുമുതൽ ക്രിസ്തു വർഷം 14-ൽ മരണമടയുന്നതുവരെ ജൂലിയസ് സീസറിന്റെ സഹോദരിയുടെ മകളുടെ മകനായ അഗസ്റ്റസ് റോമാ സാമ്രാജ്യം ഭരിച്ചു.

43 ബി.സിയിൽ മാർക്ക് ആന്റണിയോടും മാർക്കസ് അമേലിയസ് ലെപിഡസിനോടുമൊപ്പം ചേർന്ന ഒക്ടേവിയൻ 44-ൽ സീസറിന്റെ വധത്തോടെ പട്ടാള ഏകാധിപത്യം നടപ്പിലാക്കി. ഇത് റോമാ ചരിത്രത്തിലെ രണ്ടാം ട്രയം‌വിറേറ്റ് (Triumvirate‌) സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. അധികം കഴിയുന്നതിനു മൂന്നു പേരുടെ ഇടയിലുമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന വീക്ഷണഭിന്നതകൾ ട്രയം‌വിറേറ്റിന്റെ പതനത്തിനു വഴിയൊരുക്കി. ഒടുവിൽ ലെപിഡസ് പലായനം ചെയ്യുകയും ആക്ടിയത്തിലെ യുദ്ധത്തിൽ ഒക്ടേവിയന്റെ സൈന്യത്തോടു തോറ്റ മാർക്ക് ആന്റണി ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു.

അതിനുശേഷം, റോമിലെ ഭരണ സം‌വിധാനം ഏകഭരണാധികാരിയുടെ കീഴിൽ ഭരണം നടത്തുന്ന റോമൻ സെനറ്റെന്ന നിലയിലേക്ക് അഗസ്റ്റസ് പുനഃസം‌വിധാനം ചെയ്തു. വർഷങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടാണ്‌ ഇത്തരമൊരു ഭരണസം‌വിധാനം ഒരു റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കൻ രാജ്യത്തിനു ചേരുന്ന നിലയിലേക്ക് രൂപപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. പുതിയരൂപത്തിലെ റോമൻ ചക്രവർത്തിപദം മുൻകാലങ്ങളിൽ സീസറും മറ്റുള്ളവരും അനുഭവിച്ചിരുന്നത് പോലെ സ്വേച്ഛാധിപത്യമായിരുന്നില്ല. അഗസ്റ്റസ് സ്വേച്ഛാധിപതിയുടെ സ്ഥാനം നിരസിക്കുകയും സെനറ്റ് തന്നിൽ നിക്ഷേപിച്ച ഒരു പറ്റം അധികാരങ്ങൾ മാത്രം കൈയാളുകയും ചെയ്തു പോന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭരണകാലത്ത് യുദ്ധത്തിൽ നേടിയ സമ്പത്തും, വലിയൊരു വിഭാഗം പട്ടാളക്കാരുടെ വിധേയത്വവും നൽകിയ സ്വാധീനവും ജനസമ്മതിയും സെനറ്റിന്റെ തീരുമാനങ്ങളിൽ ഇടപെടാനും രാജ്യത്താകമാനം സമാധാനം നിലനിർത്താനും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു കഴിഞ്ഞു.

ആദ്യകാല ജീവിതം[തിരുത്തുക]

റോമിൽ നിന്ന് ഉദ്ദേശം 40 കിലോമീറ്റർ ദൂരത്തുള്ള വെല്ലെട്രി എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തായിരുന്നു ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പിതാവിന്റെ കുടുംബം താമസിച്ചിരുന്നത്. അഗസ്റ്റസ് ബിസി 63 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 23-ന് റോമിലാണ് ജനിച്ചത്. പാലറ്റൈൻ കുന്നിലെ ഓക്സ് ഹെഡ് എന്ന ചെറിയ ഭൂസ്വത്തിലായിരുന്നു അഗസ്റ്റസ് ജനിച്ചത്. റോമൻ ഫോറത്തിന് വളരെ അടുത്തായിരുന്നു ഇത്. ഗയസ് ഒക്റ്റേവിയസ് ഥൂറിനസ് എന്നായിരുന്നു ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന് നൽകപ്പെട്ട പേര്. അടിമകളുടെ കലാപത്തിനെതിരായി ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അച്ഛൻ ഥൂറി എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തു നേടിയ വിജയത്തിന്റെ ഓർമയ്ക്കാവണം ഈ പേര് ഒരുപക്ഷേ നൽകപ്പെട്ടത്.[1][2]

റോമിലെ ആൾത്തിരക്കുകാരണം ഒക്റ്റേവിയസിനെ തന്റെ അച്ഛന്റെ ഗ്രാമമായ വെല്ലെട്രിയിൽ താമസിച്ചു വളരാനായി കൊണ്ടുപോവുകയുണ്ടായി. തന്റെ അച്ഛന്റെ കുതിരസവാരിക്കാരായ കുടുംബത്തെപ്പറ്റി ഇദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ ഓർമക്കുറിപ്പുകളിൽ വളരെച്ചെറിയ പരാമർശം മാത്രമേ നടത്തുന്നുള്ളൂ. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അച്ഛന്റെ മുത്തച്ഛൻ രണ്ടാമത്തെ പ്യൂണിക് യുദ്ധസമയത്ത് സിസിലിയിലെ ഒരു സൈനിക ട്രിബ്യൂൺ ആയിരുന്നു. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുത്തച്ഛൻ പല പ്രാദേശിക രാഷ്ട്രീയ സ്ഥാനങ്ങളും വഹിച്ചിരുന്നയാളായിരുന്നു. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അച്ഛനായ ഗയസ് ഒക്റ്റേവിയസ് റോമൻ പ്രവിശ്യയായ മാസിഡോണിയയിലെ ഗവർണറായിരുന്നു. [note 1][3] ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അമ്മ, ഏറ്റിയ, ജൂലിയസ് സീസറിന്റെ മരുമകളായിരുന്നു.

ബി.സി 59-ൽ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അച്ഛൻ മരിച്ചു.[4] സിറിയയിൽ ഗവർണറായിരുന്ന ലൂസിയസ് മാർഷ്യസ് ഫിലിപ്പസിനെയാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അമ്മ ഇതിനുശേഷം വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചത്.[5] അലക്സാണ്ടർ ചക്രവർത്തിയുടെ പിന്മുറക്കാരനാണ് താനെന്നാണ് ഫിലിപ്പസ് അവകാശപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. ഇദ്ദേഹം ബി.സി. 56-ൽ കൗൺസൽ ആയി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഫിലിപ്പസ് ഒക്റ്റാവിയസിൽ വലിയ താൽപ്പര്യമൊന്നും കാണിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. ഇതിനാൽ ഒക്റ്റാവിയസിനെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുത്തശ്ശിയായിരുന്നു (ജൂലിയസ് സീസറിന്റെ സഹോദരി) വളർത്തിയത്. ജൂലിയ സീസറിസ് എന്നായിരുന്നു ഇവരുടെ പേര്.

ബി.സി 52-ലോ 51-ലോ ജൂലിയ സീസറിസ് മരിച്ചു. ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മുത്തശ്ശിയുടെ സംസ്കാരച്ചടങ്ങിൽ പ്രസംഗിച്ചത് ഒക്റ്റാവിയസ് ആയിരുന്നു.[6] ഇതിനു ശേഷം ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അമ്മയും രണ്ടാനച്ഛനും ഒക്റ്റാവിയസ്സിനെ വളർത്തുന്നതിൽ കൂടുതൽ ശ്രദ്ധ ചെലുത്താൻ തുടങ്ങി. ഇതിനു നാലു വർഷങ്ങൾക്കുശേഷം ഒക്റ്റാവിയസ് തനിക്ക് പ്രായപൂർത്തിയായതിന്റെ ഛിഹ്നമായ ടോഗ വിറിലിസ് ധരിക്കുവാനാരംഭിച്ചു.[7] ബി.സി. 47-ൽ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ പോണ്ടിഫുകളുടെ കോളേജിലേയ്ക്ക് പ്രവേശിപ്പിച്ചു.[8][9] അടുത്ത വർഷം ഒളിമ്പിക് ഗെയിംസ് നടത്താനുള്ള ചുമതല ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനു ലഭിച്ചു. ജൂലിയസ് സീസർ പണികഴിപ്പിച്ച വീനസ് ജെനട്രിക്സിന്റെ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ബഹുമാനാർത്ഥമാണ് ഒളിമ്പിക്സ് നടത്തപ്പെട്ടത്.[9] ഡമാസ്കസിലെ നിക്കോളസിന്റെ അഭിപ്രായത്തിൽ സീസർ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലേയ്ക്ക് പടനയിച്ചപ്പോൾ അനുഗമിക്കണമെന്ന് അഗസ്റ്റസിന് ആഗ്രഹമുണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും അമ്മയുടെ എതിർപ്പിനെത്തുടർന്ന് അത് വേണ്ടെന്നു വച്ചു.[10] ബി.സി. 46-ൽ ഹിസ്പാനിയയിലേയ്ക്ക് സീസറിനെ അനുഗമിക്കുവാൻ അമ്മ സമ്മതിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഒക്റ്റാവിയസിന് അസുഖം ബാധിച്ചതിനാൽ യാത്ര നടന്നില്ല. പോമ്പിയുടെ സൈന്യത്തിനെതിരേ യുദ്ധം ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു സീസറിന്റെ ഉദ്ദേശം.

രോഗം ഭേദമായശേഷം ഇദ്ദേഹം യുദ്ധമുന്നണിയിലേയ്ക്ക് കപ്പലിൽ യാത്ര പുറപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും കപ്പൽച്ചേതത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് പാതിവഴിയിൽ തടസ്സമുണ്ടായി. ഒരു സംഘം സൈനികരുമായി ഒക്റ്റാവിയസ് ശത്രുമേഖലയിലൂടെ യാത്ര ചെയ്ത് സീസറുടെ സൈന്യവുമായി ചേർന്നു. ഇത് സീസറിനെ വളരെ ആകർഷിക്കുകയുണ്ടായത്രേ.[7] ഈ സമയത്ത് തന്റെ വണ്ടിയിൽ യാത്ര ചെയ്യാൻ സീസർ ഒക്റ്റാവിയസിനെ അനുവദിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്നാണ് വെല്ലേയസ് പേറ്റർകുലസ് പറയുന്നത്.[11] റോമിൽ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയശേഷം സീസർ ഒരു പുതിയ വില്പത്ര തയ്യാറാക്കി വെസ്റ്റൽ കന്യകമാരെ ഏൽപ്പിച്ചു. ഇതനുസരിച്ച് ഒക്റ്റാവിയസ്സിനായിരുന്നു സീസറിന്റെ സ്വത്തുക്കളുടെ പ്രധാന അവകാശം.[12]
