ഭാരതീയനായ സാമ്പത്തിക ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും എഴുത്തുകാരനുമായിരുന്നു ഷെവലിയർ ഡോ. പി.ജെ. തോമസ് (25 ഫെബ്രുവരി 1897 - 26 ജൂലൈ 1965). 1945 മുതൽ 48 വരെ ഇന്ത്യാഗവണ്മെന്റിന്റെ സാമ്പത്തിക ഉപദേഷ്ടാവായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. ഇദ്ദേഹം 1919-ൽ രചിച്ച ധനതത്ത്വശാസ്ത്രം എന്ന കൃതിയാണ് മലയാളത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ സാമ്പത്തികശാസ്ത്ര ഗ്രന്ഥം. രാജ്യസഭയിലും മദ്രാസ് നിയമനിർമ്മാണസഭയിലും അംഗമായിരുന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്രസഭയുടെ ആദ്യ സമ്മേളനത്തിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ പ്രതിനിധി സഭാംഗമായിരുന്നു.

ജീവിതരേഖ

കോട്ടയം ജില്ലയിലെ കുറവിലങ്ങാട് സ്വദേശിയാണ്. തൃശ്ശിനാപ്പള്ളിയിൽനിന്ന് ബിരുദം നേടിയതിനുശേഷം തിരുവനന്തപുരം മഹാരാജാസ് കോളജിൽ അധ്യാപകനായി ഔദ്യോഗികജീവിതമാരംഭിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ ഓക്സ്ഫഡ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽനിന്ന് ബി.ലിറ്റ്., ഡി.ഫിൽ. ബിരുദങ്ങൾ കരസ്ഥമാക്കി. സിലോൺ സർവ്വകലാശാലയിൽ പ്രൊഫസറായി. തുടർന്നു് മദ്രാസ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ പ്രൊഫസറായി സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് (1927-41) വ്യവസായങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചു പഠിക്കാൻ ബ്രിട്ടിഷ് ഗവണ്മെന്റ് പി.ജെ. തോമസിന്റെ അധ്യക്ഷതയിൽ ഒരു കമ്മിഷൻ രൂപവത്കരിച്ചത്. 1945-48 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഇന്ത്യാ ഗവണ്മെന്റിന്റെ സാമ്പത്തിക ഉപദേഷ്ടാവായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. ക്രൈസ്തവസാഹിത്യരംഗത്തും ഇദ്ദേഹം ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ സംഭാവനകൾ നല്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. തോമസിന്റെ മലയാളസാഹിത്യവും ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളും എന്ന കൃതി ഭാഷയിൽ ഏറെ വിലപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ഗവേഷണസാമഗ്രിയാണു്.

പോർച്ചുഗീസുകാരുടെ ആഗമനത്തിനു മുമ്പുതന്നെ കേരളത്തിലെ നസ്രാണികളുടെ പക്കൽ സുറിയാനിഭാഷയിലുള്ള വേദപുസ്തകങ്ങളും വ്യാഖ്യാനങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുവെന്നും അത് കുട്ടികളെ പഠിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്നും പി.ജെ.തോമസ് സമർഥിക്കുന്നു. ഉദയംപേരൂർ സൂനഹദോസിന്റെ ഫലമായി, ചില കേരളീയ ക്രൈസ്തവ ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങൾ നിരോധിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നതായി ഇദ്ദേഹം ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കുന്നു. മിശിഹായുടെ തിരുബാല പുസ്തകം അഥവാ കന്നിമാതാവിന്റെ ചരിത്രം, യോഹന്നാൻ ബരിയൽദോന്റെ പുസ്തകം, പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ പുസ്തകം, പവിഴത്തിന്റെ പുസ്തകം (അബ്ദിശോ), മാക്കമാത്ത് (പറുദീസാ), സൂനഹദോസുകളുടെ പുസ്തകം, സ്വർഗത്തിൽനിന്നു വന്ന എഴുത്ത്, കമിസിന്റെ പാട്ടുകൾ, നർസയുടെ പുസ്തകം, പുണ്യവാളന്മാരുടെ ചരിത്രം, പാർസിമാൻ, ശകുനപുസ്തകം എന്നിവയാണ് നിരോധിച്ച കൃതികൾ.

കേരളത്തിലെ സഞ്ചാരസാഹിത്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ചും ഇദ്ദേഹം ഗവേഷണപഠനങ്ങൾ നടത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കേരളത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ സഞ്ചാരസാഹിത്യ കൃതിയെന്നു കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന വർത്തമാനപ്പുസ്തകം അഥവാ റോമായാത്ര രചിക്കപ്പെട്ടത് എ.ഡി. 1790-നും 99-നുമിടയ്ക്കാണെന്നാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അഭിപ്രായം. പാറേമ്മാക്കൽ തോമാക്കത്തനാർ രചിച്ച ഈ കൃതി ആദ്യമായി അച്ചടിച്ചത് 1936-ലാണ്.

പി.ജെ. തോമസ് 1965 ജൂല. 26-ന് അന്തരിച്ചു.
