ദക്ഷിണമീനത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും തിളക്കം കൂടിയ നക്ഷത്രമാണ് ഫോമൽഹോട്. ഉത്തരാർദ്ധഗോളത്തിലുള്ളവർക്ക് ശൈത്യകാല സന്ധ്യയിൽ തെക്കെ ചക്രവാളത്തോട് ചേർന്ന് ഇതിനെ കാണാനാവും. എന്നാൽ തെക്കെ അർദ്ധഗോളത്തിലുള്ളവർ എല്ലാ കാലത്തും സിറിയസ് അസ്തമിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഫോമൽഹോട് ഉദിക്കുന്നതു കാണാം.
ഭൂമിയിൽ നിന്ന് 25പ്രകാശവർഷം അകലെ ഫോമൽഹോട് ഒരു മുഖ്യധാരാ നക്ഷത്രമാണ്.[4] സൗരയൂഥേതരഗ്രഹങ്ങളുടെ പഠനത്തിൽ വളരെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഒരു പേരാണ് ഫോമഹോടിന്റെത്. ദൃശ്യപ്രകാശം ഉപയോഗിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ആദ്യം നിരീക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ട സൗരയൂഥേതരഗ്രഹമാണ് ഫോമൽഹോടിനെ ഭ്രമണം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഫോമൽഹോട് ബി എന്ന ഗ്രഹം.[5]
