ഒരേ ലിംഗത്തിൽപെട്ട വ്യക്തികൾ തമ്മിലുള്ള വിവാഹത്തെ സ്വവർഗവിവാഹം എന്നും [1] അതിനുള്ള നിയമസാധുതയെ വിവാഹതുല്യത[2] എന്നും പറയുന്നു. സ്വവർഗവിവാഹങ്ങൾ നിയമവിധേയമാക്കിയിട്ടുള്ള ചില പാശ്ചാത്യ രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങൾ[3] അർജെന്റിന , ബ്രസീൽ , കാനഡ , ഡെൻമാർക്ക്‌ , ഫ്രാൻസ് , ഐസ്ലാൻഡ്‌, ലെക്സംബർഗ്, നെതർലാൻഡ്‌, ന്യൂ സീലാൻഡ്‌ , നോർവേ, പോർച്ചുഗൽ, സ്പെയിൻ , സ്വീഡെൻ, സൌത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്ക മുതലായവയാണ്. മെക്സിക്കോയിലെ ചില പ്രവിശ്യകളും യു. എസ്.എ യിലെ ചില സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും[4][5][6] ഈ ഗണത്തിൽ പെടുന്നു.1989- ഇൽ ഡെന്മാർക്കിൽ ആദ്യത്തെ സ്വവർഗ്ഗവിവാഹം രെജിസ്റ്റെർ ചെയ്യപെട്ടു എങ്കിലും 2001-ഇൽ നെതർലാൻഡ്‌ സ്വവർഗവിവാഹങ്ങളെ നിയമപരമായി അംഗീകരിക്കുന്ന ലോകത്തിലെ പ്രഥമരാഷ്ട്രമായി[7]. 21 ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ ആദ്യദശകം മുതല്ക്കാണ് ഇത്തരം വിവാഹങ്ങൾ അംഗീകരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടുള്ള നിയമങ്ങൾ കൂടുതലായി നിലവിൽ വന്നു തുടങ്ങിയതും, അതിന്റെ ചുവടുപിടിച്ചു സ്വവർഗബന്ധങ്ങൾ അംഗീകരിച്ചു കിട്ടുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള നിയമപോരാട്ടങ്ങളും[8] സാമൂഹിക മുന്നേറ്റങ്ങളും ഇന്ത്യ പോലുളള രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ[9] കൂടുതൽ ശക്തിയാർജിച്ചതും. ഭരണ-രാഷ്ട്ര-സാമൂഹിക വികസനാവശ്യങ്ങൾകായി നികുതി അടയ്ക്കുന്ന ഏതൊരു പൌരനേയും പോലെ, ഗവണ്മെന്റ് ആനുകൂല്യങ്ങൾ, പെൻഷൻ , ആശുപത്രി സേവനങ്ങൾ, പങ്കാളിയുടെ സ്വത്തവകാശം മുതലായവ[10] സ്വവർഗവിവാഹം നിയമവിധേയമാക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ സ്വവർഗാനുരാഗികൾക്കും സാധ്യമാവുകയും അത്തരം ബന്ധങ്ങൾക്ക് കൂടുതൽ സാമൂഹിക സ്വീകാര്യത കൈവരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

വിവാഹരജിസ്ട്രേഷൻ സാധ്യമായിട്ടുള്ള വിവിധ രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ ചിലപ്പോൾ മതപരമായ പരിമിതികൾ കാരണം സ്വവർഗവിവാഹങ്ങൾ പരമ്പരാഗത രീതിയിയുള്ള മതാനുഷ്ടാനങ്ങൾ പിന്തുടരുന്നവയായിരിക്കില്ല. ചില രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ നവീന ക്രിസ്തീയ സഭകളും[11][12] മറ്റും ഇത്തരം വിവാഹങ്ങളെ അംഗീകരിക്കുന്നവയാണ്. 2014ൽ വത്തിക്കാനിൽ ഫ്രാൻസിസ് മാർപ്പാപ്പയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ നടന്ന അസാധാരണ സിനഡ് സ്വവർഗവിവാഹങ്ങളെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള[13] പ്രമേയം അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത്‌ ഈ വിഷയത്തിൽ ആഗോളതലത്തിൽ ഏറെ ചർച്ചകൾക്ക് വഴിതെളിച്ചു. സ്വദേശങ്ങളിൽ[14] സ്വവർഗവിവാഹങ്ങൾക്ക് നിയമ-സാമൂഹിക അംഗീകാരമില്ലാത്തതിനാൽ ചിലർ അതിനു പൂർണ്ണ അംഗീകാരമുള്ള വിദേശനാടുകളിൽ പോയി വിവാഹങ്ങൾ നടത്താറുണ്ട്‌.[15] 2021 ലെ കണക്കു പ്രകാരം താഴെ പറയുന്ന 29 രാജ്യങ്ങൾ സ്വവർഗ്ഗ വിവാഹത്തെ നിയമവിധേയമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട് (രാജ്യം മുഴുവനുമോ ചില സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രമായോ)
