സാധാരണ യൂണിക്സ് അടിസ്ഥാനമായ ഓപ്പറേറ്റിംഗ് സിസ്റ്റങ്ങളിൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഓൺ സ്ക്രീൻ ടെക്സ്റ്റ് എഡിറ്ററാണ് വി.ഐ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. [1] 1976-ൽ ബിൽ ജോയ് എന്ന പ്രോഗ്രാമർ ആദ്യകാല ബി.എസ്.ഡി. യുനിക്സ് പതിപ്പിനു വേണ്ടിയാണ് ഈ പ്രോഗ്രാം നിർമ്മിച്ചത്. വി.ഐയുടെ പല പതിപ്പുകളും ബിൽ ജോയുടെ കോഡ് അതേ പടി പിന്തുടരുന്നുണ്ട്. എന്നാൽ മറ്റു ചില പതിപ്പുകളിലാകട്ടെ പ്രോഗ്രാം മുഴുവനായും മാറ്റിയെഴുതുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.
