അമേരിക്കക്കാരനായ വാങ്മീമാംസകനും ,ബഹുഭാഷാപണ്ഡിതനും നിഘണ്ടുകാരനുമാണ് വില്ല്യം ഡ്വൈറ്റ് വിറ്റ്നി.( ജ:1827 ഫെബ്: 9,– മ:1894).ദ് സെഞ്ച്വറി ഡിക്ഷനറി എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിന്റെ എഡിറ്ററുമായിരുന്നു വിറ്റ്നി.

സംഭാവനകൾ

അമേരിയ്ക്കൻ സംസ്കൃതഭാഷാ പ്രണയികളിൽ ഗണ്യമായ സ്വാധീനം വിറ്റ്നി അക്കാലത്ത് ചെലുത്തിയിരുന്നു. അഥർവ്വ വേദത്തിന്റെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പരിഭാഷ വിറ്റ്നിയുടെ അതുല്യസംഭാവനകളിലൊന്നാണ്. സംസ്കൃതഭാഷയിലെധാതുക്കൾ, ക്രിയാരൂപങ്ങൾ, കൃദന്തങ്ങൾ എന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥം അദ്ദേഹം1885 ൽ ജർമ്മനിയിലെ ലീപ്സിഗിൽ നിന്നു പ്രകാശിപ്പിയ്ക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ഭാരതീയ ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും തല്പരനായിരുന്ന വിറ്റ്നി സൂര്യസിദ്ധാന്തം എന്ന കൃതി കുറിപ്പുകളോടെ അമേരിക്കൻ മാസികയിൽ 1860 ൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിയ്ക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.
