ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ ചെയർമാൻ അസിം പ്രേംജിയുടെ പിതാവ് ഹാഷം പ്രേംജി 1945-ൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ച വെസ്റ്റേൺ ഇന്ത്യാ വെജിറ്റെബിൾ പ്രോഡക്റ്റ്സ് എന്ന സസ്യ എണ്ണ കമ്പനിയിൽനിന്നാണ് ഇന്നത്തെ വിപ്രോയുടെ തുടക്കം. മഹാരാഷ്ട്രയിലെ അമല്നീരിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ച വനസ്പതി നിർമ്മാണ ഫാക്ടറിയിൽ നിന്നു തുടങ്ങിയ വിപ്രൊ പിന്നീട് പല മേഖലകളിലേക്കും പ്രവർത്തനം വ്യാപിപ്പിച്ചു. 1970കളുടെ അന്ത്യത്തിൽ വിപ്രോ ഐ.ടി മേഖലയിലേക്ക് പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ വ്യാപിപ്പിച്ചു.
