വികസ്വരരാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ മൊബൈൽഫോണുകളിൽ വിക്കിപീഡിയ സൗജന്യമായി നൽകാനുള്ള വിക്കിമീ‍ഡിയ ഫൗണ്ടേഷന്റെ പദ്ധതിയാണ് വിക്കിപീഡിയ സീറോ.[1][2]  ഡാറ്റ ഉപയോഗിക്കാനുള്ള ചെലവില്ലാതെതന്നെ സ്വതന്ത്ര വിജ്ഞാനത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ലഭ്യത വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കുക എന്നുള്ളതായിരുന്നു ഈ പദ്ധതിയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം. 72 രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ 97 ഓപ്പറേറ്റർമാരുമായി ചേർന്ന് 8000 മില്യൺ ആളുകൾക്ക് വിക്കിപീഡിയ ലഭ്യത നൽകുകയായിരുന്നു ഈ പദ്ധതിയിലൂടെ ചെയ്തത്.[3]

2012 ലാണ് ഈ പദ്ധതി ആരംഭിച്ചത്.[4] 2013 ൽ ഈ പദ്ധതിക്ക് ആക്ടിവിസത്തിനുള്ള[5] സൗത്ത് ബൈ സൗത്ത്‍വെസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ററാക്ടീവ് അവാർഡ് ലഭിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. നിരവധി വർഷങ്ങളോളം നെറ്റ് ന്യൂട്രാലിറ്റി തത്ത്വങ്ങൾ ലംഘിക്കുന്നു എന്ന വിമർശനം നേരിട്ടതിനുശേഷം 2018 ഫെബ്രുവരിയിൽ ഈ പദ്ധതി നിറുത്തുകയാണെന്നുള്ള തീരുമാനം വിക്കിമീഡിയ ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. കൂടാതെ പാർട്നർഷിപ്പുകൾക്കായി പുതിയ സമീപനം സ്വീകരിക്കുമെന്നും പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു.

ഫേസ്ബുക്ക് സീറോയാണ് വിക്കിപീഡിയ സീറോക്ക് പ്രചോദനമായതെന്ന് പരാമർശിക്കാറുണ്ട്.[6]

16 ഫെബ്രുവരി 2018 ൽ വിക്കിമീഡിയ ഫൗണ്ടേഷൻ വിക്കിപീഡിയ സീറോ പദ്ധതി നിറുത്തുകയാണെന്നും 2018 അവസാനത്തോടെ അത് അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുമെന്നും പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു.[22][23]
