കേരളത്തിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്ന വാലുകുലുക്കികളിൽ ഏറ്റവും വലുതാണ് വലിയ വാലുകുലുക്കി.[6] [7][8][9] ദേഹത്തിൻറെ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും കറുപ്പ്, കണ്ണിനു മുകളിലും ചിറകിലും ശരീരത്തിൻറെ കീഴ്ഭാഗത്തും വെളുപ്പ്. ഈ പക്ഷിയെ ഒറ്റ നോട്ടത്തിൽ മണ്ണാത്തിപ്പുള്ളുമായി വളരെ സാമ്യം തോന്നാം. എന്നാൽ വാലിൻറെ നീളക്കൂടുതലും കണ്ണിനു മുകളിലെ വെളുത്ത ‘പുരികവും’ വാലുകുലുക്കിയെ തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ സഹായിക്കും.
കേരളത്തിൽ കൂടു കെട്ടി പ്രജനനം നടത്തുന്ന ഒരേ ഒരിനം വാലുകുലുക്കി ഇതു മാത്രമാണ്.കൂടുകെട്ടുന്നത് നവംബർ മുതൽ മേയ് വരെയുള്ള കാലത്താണ്. പാറക്കെട്ടുകൾക്കിടയിലും കെട്ടിടങ്ങൾക്കും പാലത്തിനും അടിയിലുമൊക്കെയാണ് ഇവ കൂടുണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്. മുട്ടയിടുന്ന കാലത്ത് ഇവ ഉച്ചത്തിൽ ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാക്കാറുണ്ട്. മറ്റിനം വാലുകുലുക്കികളെല്ലാം ദേശാടകരായി കേരളത്തിലെത്തുന്നവയാണ്.
