1905-ലെ വിപ്ലവകാലത്ത് ജയിലിൽനിന്ന് ഫ്രാൻസിലേക്ക് രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. അവിടെനിന്ന് സ്പെയിനിലേക്കും പിന്നീട് ന്യൂയോർക്കിലേക്കും പോയി. 1917-ൽ സ്വരാജ്യത്തേക്കു തിരിച്ചുവന്നു. ബോൾഷെവിക് പാർട്ടിയുടെ നേതാവായി. ഒക്ടോബർ വിപ്ലവത്തിൽ അധികാരം പിടിച്ചെടുക്കുന്നതിനു നേതൃത്വം നല്കി. 1917-18 കാലത്ത് വിദേശകാര്യങ്ങളുടെ കമ്മിഷണറായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ ബ്രെസ്റ്റ്- ലിറ്റോപ്സ്ക് സഖ്യത്തെച്ചൊല്ലി രാജിവച്ച് യുദ്ധകാര്യങ്ങളുടെ കമ്മിഷണറായി (1918-1925). ട്രോട്സ്കിയാണ് ചെമ്പടയെ സുശക്തസേനയാക്കിയത്. ലെനിന്റെ മരണശേഷം (1924) അധികാരം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. 1929-ൽ നാടുകടത്തി.
