ഇന്ത്യ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണത്തിൽ നിന്നും മോചിതമായി ഒരു പരമോന്നത റിപ്പബ്ലിക് രാജ്യമായമായതിന്റെ ഓർമ്മക്കായി ജനുവരി 26 ന് ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നതിനെയാണ് റിപ്പബ്ലിക് ദിനം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ദേശീയ അവധി ദിവസങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ജനുവരി 26.

1947 ഓഗസ്റ്റ് 15 ന് ഇന്ത്യക്ക് സ്വാതന്ത്യം ലഭിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പരമോന്നത ഭരണ ഘടന നിലവിൽ വന്നത് 1950 ജനുവരി 26 നാണ്. 1947 മുതൽ 1950 വരെയുള്ള കൈമാറ്റ കാലയളവിൽ ജോർജ്ജ് നാലാമനായിരുന്നു ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഭരണ തലവൻ. ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ ഗവർണർ ജനറൽ സി. രാ‍ജഗോപാലാചാരി ആയിരുന്നു. 1950 ജനുവരി 26 ന് ഡോ. രാജേന്ദ്രപ്രസാദ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ആദ്യത്തെ രാഷ്ട്രപതിയായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

ഈ ദിവസത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം നിലനിർത്താൻ എല്ലാ വർഷവും ഇന്ത്യയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനമായ ന്യൂ ഡെൽഹിയിൽ വൻ സൈനിക പരേഡുകളും സാംസ്കാരിക പരിപാടികളും നടത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. സൈനിക പരേഡ് രാഷ്ട്രപതി ഭവനിൽ തുടങ്ങി രാജ്‌പഥിൽ കൂടി ചരിത്ര പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ചെങ്കോട്ടയിൽ ചെന്ന് ചേർന്ന് അവസാനിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മൂന്ന് സേനകളായ കരസേന, നാവികസേന, വ്യോമസേന എന്നിവരുടെ സൈനികർ അവരുടെ മുഴുവൻ ഔദ്യോഗിക വേഷത്തിൽ ഈ ദിവസം പരേഡ് നടത്തുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യൻ സൈന്യത്തിന്റെ പരമോന്നത നേതാവായ രാഷ്ട്രപതി ഈ സമയം ഇതിന്റെ സല്യൂട് സ്വീകരിക്കുന്നു. ഇതു കൂടാതെ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സാംസ്കാരിക വൈവിധ്യം കാണിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പാട് കാഴ്ചകളും ഈ പരേഡിൽ പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. കൂടാതെ ഇന്ത്യൻ വ്യോമസേനയുടെ വിമാന സൈനിക പ്രദർശനങ്ങളും ഈ ദിവസം നടക്കുന്നു.

ഡെൽഹി കൂടാതെ എല്ലാ സംസ്ഥാന തലസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലും അതാത് സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ഗവർണർമാർ പതാക ഉയർത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
