ഗ്രാം നെഗറ്റീവ് ആയ ഒരു ബാക്ടീരിയയാണ് യെഴ്സീനിയ പെസ്ടിസ് (Yersinia pestis). ദണ്ഡിന്റെ ആകൃതിയുള്ള ഇവ ജന്തുജന്യ രോഗമായ പ്ലേഗ് എലികളിലും മനുഷ്യരിലും ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നു. . [1]. ക്സീനോപ്സില്ല കിഒപിസ് (Xenopsylla cheopis ) എന്ന എലിച്ചെള്ള് (Rat flea ) ആണ് ഈ രോഗം പകർത്തുന്ന കീടം (Vector). ഈ ബാക്ടീരിയക്കെതിരെ വളരെ ഫലപ്രദമായ മരുന്നുകൾ ഇന്ന് ലഭ്യമാണ്. [2] . അങ്ങിനെ ഇവ മനുഷ്യർക്ക് മാത്രമല്ല മൃഗങ്ങൾക്കും രോഗങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ബാക്ടീരിയ ആണ്.[3]
