പുഷ്പിക്കുന്ന സസ്യങ്ങളിലെ റുബിയേസീ കുടുംബത്തിലെ തന്നെ ഉപകുടുംബമായ റുബിയോയ്ഡേയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ട മൊറിൻഡേ ഗോത്രത്തിലെ ഒരു ജനുസ്സാണ് മൊറിൻഡ - Morinda.[2]. മോറസ് (morus) (മൾബറി)[3] എന്ന ലാറ്റിൻ വാക്കിൽ നിന്നും ഇൻഡിക്ക (indica) (ഇന്ത്യ -എന്നർഥം) എന്ന വാക്കിൽ നിന്നുമാണ് ഈ പേരു കിട്ടിയത്. ജാപ്പനീസ്, കൊറിയൻ, ചൈനീസ് മരുന്നുകളിൽ ഔഷധമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. ഏകദേശം 80ഓളം ഇനങ്ങൾ ഇതിലുണ്ട്. ഇതിലെ പല ഇനങ്ങളും ലോകമെമ്പാടും ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ വളരുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ ജനുസ്സിലെ ഇനങ്ങൾ മരങ്ങളായും കുറ്റിച്ചെടികളായും വള്ളികളായും വളരുന്നു. മൊറിൻഡ സിട്രിഫോളിയ എന്നയിനങ്ങൾക്ക് മുന്തിരി വള്ളികളോട് വളരെ സാമ്യമുണ്ട്[4].
