ഇറാനിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ രണ്ടാമത്തെ നഗരമാണ് മശ്‌ഹദ്. ഇസ്ലാം മതത്തിലെ ഷിയ വിഭാഗക്കാരുടെ ഏറ്റവും വിശുദ്ധമായ നഗരങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണിത്. ടെഹ്രാനില്‍ നിന്ന് 850 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ കിഴക്കായി റസാവി ഖൊറസാന്‍ പ്രവിശ്യയുടെ മദ്ധ്യത്തില്‍, അഫ്ഗാനിസ്ഥാന്‍-തുര്‍ക്‌മെനിസ്ഥാന്‍ രാജ്യങ്ങളുമായുള്ള അതിര്‍ത്തിക്കടുത്തായാണ് ഈ നഗരം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. 2006 കനേഷുമാരി പ്രകാരം 2,427,316 ആണ് ഇവിടുത്തെ ജനസംഖ്യ.

ഇമാം റെസയുടെ ശവകുടീരം ഇവിടെയാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. മഹാകവി ഫെര്‍ഡോവ്സിയുടെ നഗരമായും മഷാദ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. പെര്‍സ്യന്‍ ദേശീയ പുരണമായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഷഹ്നാമെഹിന്റെ കര്‍ത്താവാണദ്ദേഹം.
