മഹാരാഷ്ട്ര സംസ്ഥാനത്തിലെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ഭാഷയും മറാഠികളുടെ മാതൃഭാഷയും ഇന്തോ-ആര്യൻ ഭാഷാ കുടുംബത്തിൽ പെടുന്ന ഒരു ഭാഷയുമാണ് മറാഠി. ലോകവ്യാപകമായി ഏതാണ്ട് 9 കോടി ആളുകൾ ഈ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ആളുകൾ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന നാലാം സ്ഥാനമാണ് ഉള്ളത്. ബംഗാളിയോട് ഒപ്പം മറാഠി എ.ഡി. 1000 മുതൽ മുതലുള്ള സാഹിത്യചരിത്രം അവകാശപ്പെടാവുന്ന ഇന്തോ-ആര്യൻ ഭാഷാ കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പഴക്കമുള്ള ഭാഷയാണ്.

മറാഠി ഭാഷയ്ക്ക് കുറഞ്ഞത് 1500 വർഷത്തെ ചരിത്രം ഉണ്ട്. ആ ഭാഷയുടെ വ്യാകരണം പാലിയിൽ നിന്നും പ്രകൃതിൽ നിന്നുമാണ് ഉത്ഭവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. മഹാരാഷ്ട്രി, മഹാരാതി, മൽഹതി, മാർത്തി എന്നീ പേരുകളിലും ഈ ഭാഷ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
