ദക്ഷിണേഷ്യ, ദക്ഷിണപൂർവേഷ്യ, തിബെത്ത് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ മിക്ക ലിപികളുടേയും പൂർവരൂപമാണ് ബ്രാഹ്മി ലിപി[1]. ബി.സി.ഇ. ആറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടു മുതൽ ബ്രാഹ്മി ലിപി ഉപയോഗത്തിലിരുന്നതായി കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്[2][3][4]. എങ്കിലും ബി.സി.ഇ. മൂന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ആലേഖനം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട അശോകന്റെ ശിലാശാസനങ്ങളാണ് ബ്രാഹ്മി ലിപിയിൽ രചിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളവയിൽ പ്രശസ്തമായത്.
കൊറിയൻ അക്ഷരമാലയായ ഹാൻഗുൽ ബ്രഹ്മി ലിപിയിൽ നിന്നും സ്വാംശീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടതാണെന്ന് ചില പണ്ഡിതർ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. ലോക വ്യാപകമായി ഇന്ന് ഉപയോഗിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഹിന്ദു-അറബി സംഖ്യാസമ്പ്രദായത്തിന്റെ പൂർവികനും ബ്രാഹ്മി ലിപി തന്നെയാണ്[അവലംബം ആവശ്യമാണ്].
