വേനല്ക്കാലത്ത് വിപണിയില് ലഭ്യമാകുന്ന പഴങ്ങളില് ഏറ്റവും പ്രചാരമേറിയതാണ് തണ്ണിമത്തന് . കേരളത്തില് കാസര്ഗോഡ് ജില്ലയില് തണ്ണിമത്തന് വ്യാപകമായി കൃഷി ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും മറ്റ് സ്ഥലങ്ങളില് ഇവ പരിമിതമായെ കൃഷിചെയ്യുന്നതായി കാണാറുള്ളു.മലബര് ഭാഗങ്ങളില് വത്തക്ക എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന തണ്ണിമത്തന് വേനല്ക്കലത്തിന്റെ ആരംഭത്തോടെ മറ്റു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില് നിന്നും കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് വന്തോതില് ഇറക്കുമതി ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നു.
വെള്ളരി വര്ഗ്ഗ വിളയായ തണ്ണിമത്തന്റെ ജന്മ ദേശം ആഫ്രിക്കയാണ്.ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെല്ലാം തന്നെ ഈ വിള വ്യാപകമായി കൃഷി ചെയ്തു വരുന്നു. വിളഞ്ഞ തണ്ണിമത്തന്റെ ഉള്ളിലുള്ള മാംസളമായ ഭാഗമാണ് ഭക്ഷണമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത്.മറ്റു വെള്ളരി വര്ഗ്ഗ വിളകളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് തണ്ണിമത്തനില് ഇരുമ്പിന്റെ അംശം കൂടുതലാണ്. തണ്ണിമത്തന്റെ നീര് (juice)നല്ലൊരു ദാഹശമനി കൂടിയാണ്.
