യു.കെ.യുടെ ഭാഗമായ വെയില്‍‌സിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാന നഗരമാണ്‌ കാര്‍ഡിഫ്. തെക്കുകിഴക്കന്‍ വെയി‌ല്‍‌സില്‍ ബ്രിസ്റ്റോള്‍ ചാനലിന്റെ കരയില്‍ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഏ.ഡി. 75-ല്‍ റോമാക്കാര്‍ ഇവിടെ ഒരു കോട്ട നിര്‍മ്മിച്ചിരുന്നുവെങ്കിലും, പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടില്‍ നോര്‍മനുകളുടെ വരവോടെ മാത്രമാണ്‌‍ പട്ടണം സ്ഥാപിതമായത്. പത്തൊന്‍പതാം നുറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ ആദ്യകാലം വരെ ജനസംഖ്യ കുറവായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ ആരംഭത്തോടെ ലോകത്തില്‍ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ കല്‍ക്കരി കയറ്റുമതി ചെയ്യുന്ന തുറമുഖമായി കാര്‍ഡിഫ് മാറി. കല്‍ക്കരി വ്യവസായം 1960-കളില്‍ അവസാനിച്ചെങ്കിലും വെയില്‍‌സിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരം അതിന്റെ മുഖ്യവാണിജ്യകേന്ദ്രമായി തുടരുന്നു.
