ഇന്ത്യൻ മഹാസമുദ്രത്തിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ നാവികസേന വിന്യസിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന വിമാനവാഹിനിക്കപ്പലാണ് ഐ.എൻ.എസ്. വിരാട് (ഹിന്ദി: भा नौ पो विराट). ഈ മേഖലയിൽ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഏക വിമാനവാഹിനി കപ്പലാണിത്.

ചരിത്രം

1959 നവംബർ 18-ന് ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് റോയൽ നാവികസേനയുടെ വിമാനവാഹിനി കപ്പലായ എച്ച്.എം.എസ്. ഹെംസ് എന്ന പേരിലാണ് ഐ.എൻ.എസ്. വിരാട് കമ്മിഷൻ ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടത്. 1985 വരെ റോയൽ നാവികസേനയുടെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്ന ഈ കപ്പൽ, 1986 ഏപ്രിലിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ നാവികസേന വാങ്ങിച്ചു. 1993-ൽ വിരാടിൻറെ എഞ്ചിൻ മുറിയിൽ വെള്ളം കയറിയതിനെത്തുടർന്ന് രണ്ടുവർഷത്തോളം ഇത് സർവീസിലില്ലായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് 1995-ൽ പുതിയ സെർച്ച് റഡാർ സ്ഥാപിച്ച് പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ പരിഹരിച്ച് വീണ്ടും സർവീസിലെത്തുകയായിരുന്നു.
