മൈക്രോസോഫ്റ്റ് വിപണിയിലിറക്കിയ ഒരു ഓപ്പറേറ്റിംഗ് സിസ്റ്റം ആണ് 'എം.എസ്.-ഡോസ്(MS-DOS: Microsoft Disk Operating System). മൈക്രോസോഫ്റ്റ് ഡിസ്ക് ഓപ്പറേറ്റിംഗ് സിസ്റ്റം എന്നതിന്റെ ചുരുക്കെഴുത്താണ് എം.എസ്.-ഡോസ്. 1980-1995 വരെയുള്ള കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ പേഴ്സണൽ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടെറുകളിൽ പ്രധാനമായും ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നത് ഡോസ് ആയിരുന്നു.

1981ൽ IBMന്റെ പേഴ്സണൽ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടെറുകൾക്കായി ഒരു ഓപ്പറേറ്റിങ് സിസ്റ്റം എന്ന ആവശ്യം പൂർത്തീകരിക്കാൻ ആണ് ഡോസ് ഉണ്ടായത്. [1]ക്യൂ-ഡോസ്( QDOS:Quick and Dirty Operating System) എന്ന ഓപ്പറേറ്റിങ് സിസ്റ്റം സിയാറ്റിൽ കമ്പ്യൂട്ടേർസ് [2]എന്ന കമ്പനിയിൽ നിന്നും മൈക്രോസോഫ്റ്റ് വാങ്ങി. ഇതു വികസിപ്പിച്ചാണ് ഡോസ് ഉണ്ടായത്. "MS-DOS 1.0" എന്നു പേരു നല്കിയ ഓപ്പറേറ്റിങ് സിസ്റ്റത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ പതിപ്പ് പുറത്തിറക്കിയത് 1982ൽ ആയിരുന്നു. IBM കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറുകളിലെ ഓപ്പറേറ്റിങ് സിസ്റ്റം PC DOS എന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെട്ടത്. സമാന്തരമായിട്ടാണ് ഇവ രണ്ടും തുടക്കത്തിൽ വികസിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നതെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് രണ്ടും വ്യത്യസ്ത വഴികളിലാണ് പോയത്.
x86 പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോമിന് വേണ്ടിയായിരുന്നു ഡോസ് പുറത്തിറക്കിയിരുന്നത്. [3]2000ത്തിൽ ഡോസിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണം മൈക്രോസോഫ്റ്റ് നിർത്തിവച്ചു. ഇതിനകം ഡോസിന്റെ 8 പതിപ്പുകൾ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയിരുന്നു.
