SN 2006gy ഇതു വരെ നമ്മൾ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതിൽ വച്ച് ഏറ്റവും പ്രകാശമാനമായ സൂപ്പർനോവ ആണെങ്കിലും അതു 23.8 കോടി പ്രകാശവർഷം അകലെയുള്ളതാകയാൽ നമുക്ക് അതിന്റെ തീവ്രത അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടില്ല. എന്നാൽ Eta Carinae നമ്മിൽ നിന്നു വെറും 7,500 പ്രകാശവർഷം അകലെ കിടക്കുന്ന നക്ഷത്രം ആയതിനാൽ അത് സൂപ്പർനോവയായി മാറുകയാണെങ്കിൽ അതിന്റെ തീവ്രത അതി ഭീമമായി തന്നെ നമുക്ക് ദർശിക്കാനാവും.
