അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഓരോ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിനും അതിൻറെതായ സംസ്ഥാന പതാകകൾ നിലവിലുണ്ട്. അവ അതതു സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ പ്രാദേശികമായ സ്വാധീനത്തെയും സാംസ്കാരിക പൈതൃകത്തെയും പ്രതിനിധാനം ചെയ്യും വിധം രൂപകല്പന ചെയ്യപെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. 1893ൽ ഷിക്കാഗോയിൽ വെച്ചുനടന്ന ഒരു പൊതുപ്രദർശനതിൽ വിവിധ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കനുള്ള ഒരു മാർഗ്ഗം എന്ന നിലയ്ക്കാണ് പതാകകൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയത്. 1893നും ഒന്നാം ലോക മഹായുദ്ധത്തിനും ഇടയ്ക്കാണ് ഭൂരിഭാഗം പതാകകളും രൂപകല്പന ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടതും നിലവിൽ വന്നതും.[2]
